meeting of the PERGAMON project on methane hydrates and permafrost, at Brussels. I have been litteraly astonished by the presentation given by John Kessler (Texas A&M University) about the fate of methane emitted in the Gulf of Mexico when the Deep Water Horizon oil plateform exploded. All methane has been consumed within months by bacteria/archaea, within an ocean layer at about 1000 meters of depth. The bacterial filter thus clearly constitutes a key element to deal with when considering the possible problem of hydrate degassing in the future...
